Turn Undead

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

Perhaps the most important charism granted to clerics, save only laying-on-hands, is the ability to turn undead and demons. A cleric can channel the might of God to appal or smite unholy creatures, but as this power is channeled through a mortal vessel, success is not always assured. When encountering undead, a cleric can attempt to turn the unholy. Only one attempt can be made per encounter. To determine success, roll 2d6, then roll 2d6 again to determine number-affected, and consult the tables below. As with casting cleric-spells, turning undead requires a cross; use of a silver cross adds a +2 bonus to rolls for determining success and number-affected.

In consulting the below tables, it is necessary to understand the particular terminology. When an unholy creature is Turned, it has been repulsed, and cannot come within a ten-foot radius of the cleric. When an undead is Dispelled, it has been rendered inanimate (in the case of skeletons and revenants), or its spirit banished from the mortal plane (in the case of incorporeal and greater undead). When a demon is Banished, it is has been cast back to Hell. Automatic means that the cleric succeeds without a roll.
