Troglodytes are close relatives of lizardmen who inhabit subterranean caverns in temperate regions of the world, rather than tropical islands. Living in a lightless world, troglodytes have become depigmented, having pallid grey scales, and relying far more upon their senses of smell than on their small, sensitive eyes. Being reptiles, they are attracted to heat, and often establish their lairs near underground hot-springs. Catfish and other stygofauna found in subterranean pools form the greater part of their diet, often supplemented with the flesh of hapless dwarves and goblins who wander into their lairs. Due to less abundant and less nutritious food-sources, troglodytes are smaller than their tropical cousins, having a length of 6 feet and a standing-height of 3.5 feet.
