Many variables can affect the outcome of a combat.
Half-swording is the act of grabbing a sword by the blade with your offhand in-order to gain better control of the weapon. It gives a +1 bonus to parries and piercing atttacks, but a -1 penalty to all slashing attacks. For the purposes of reach, your sword functions as a small weapon.
When wielding a sword, dagger, or a polearm capable of dealing piercing damage, you can choose to make a lunging thrust attack on your turn. Performing a lunging thrust costs movement. For every foot of movement, you get a +1 bonus to damage, but you also get a -1 penalty to hit. Should you move forward 3 feet, you get +3 damage, but -3 to your attack roll. You can expend a maximum of 10 feet of movement to perform a lunging thrust.
When wielding a sword, seax, or parrying-dagger, you can parry a combatant’s attack as a reaction. When parrying, you increase your armour class by 1 plus your dexterity modifier.
You can atack a number targets within range equal to your proficiency bonus. When sweep-attacking, your attack and damage rolls are not modified by strength or proficiency. +X weapon bonuses are stil added. A sweeping-attack cannot be performed with a small weapon.
